346 Learning Objectives

Through active participation in Psychology 346 (engagement in the lectures, assignments, and readings), I hope the student would gain:

1) knowledge and understanding of the vocabulary, concepts, and theories of psychology regarding cognitive, behavioral, and other categories of exceptionality in children and youth.

2) knowledge and understanding of the relationship between the psychology of exceptionality and other health and social services disciplines.

3) appreciation of the multiple research methods used in the investigation of exceptional in children and youth.

4) appreciation of the application of the psychology of exceptional children in child therapy, clinical and social services, and education; as well as an appreciation of the experience and phenomenology of youth with various categories of exceptionality.

5) appreciation for the values of psychology:

a) the need for an ethical standard in the study of human behavior
b) reasonable skepticism and intellectual curiosity
c) ambiguity tolerance for complex phenomenon
d) recognition and respect for diversity in human characteristics and experience

6) improved critical thinking with respect to issues of understanding human exceptionality.

7) a opportunity to work the written expression of questions and concepts in human exceptionality.
