AN INTEGRATIVE FRAMEWORK FOR PSYCHOPATHOLOGY:

THE BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL MODEL

The biopsychosocial model:

    1. Recognizes causal factors at biological and psychological levels of analysis.

    2. Recognizes interacting causal factors (incorporates Diathesis-stress concept).

    3. Recognizes mediating causal factors.

    4. Recognizes the complexity of abnormal behavior.

The general framework:

For any given behavior/symptom/disorder, BIOLOGICAL FACTORS, PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS, CULTURAL FACTORS, STRESSFUL LIFE EVENTS, and RELATIONSHIPS usually interact in some way to influence MEDIATING FACTORS, which in turn, influence BEHAVIOR.

We must also remember that BEHAVIOR can feedback to STRESSFUL LIFE EVENTS and RELATIONSHIPS.
