Develop a Web Site for Adolescents Who Live in Under-Serviced Areas
This is a assignment for really creative students!
Your task is to develop a Web Site for adolescents,
or professionals that work
with adolescents residing in under-serviced areas (e.g., rural or urban areas fitting with the course definition). Your site could be a valuable asset because your target population may be somewhat isolated and in need of a site that offers help or support (e.g., social networking site to prevent gang involvement, or, in helping rural teens combat social isolation).
The Site can provide information
about some adolescent issue,
or actually provide some type of creative service
(or both).
Your Site, of course, can be bolstered through
creative linking.
If you wish, you can mount your Web Pages on a
server
(only if you already know how to do this) and
provide me the appropriate
web address. If you do not have the technological
knowledge for this assignment,
you can simply create a "paper" site that you
turn in to me.
If you mount the site on a server for me to look
at,
please put the following information on each page
in a conspicuous place:
"This site was developed as a class project for
Dr.Gary Creasey's, Adolescent
Development Class. This is only a demonstration
site, does not offer real
services, and the information may not be accurate.
If you want expert advice
on this subject, I encourage you to visit
______________________________
(insert link for a reputable organization)".
After you develop the site, you will need to write
a 6-8 page paper
discussing the rationale for your site, information,
links, etc., and how material
presented in class and the book guided your decision.
If you really do a great job,
I will link my course page to your site to assist
future students!
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
1) So, if I do a site on say, teen depression, I just write a term paper on depression. No. This strategy will land you a failing grade. In the paper, you need to discuss your site and how the course materials guided the rationale for the site, information contained in site, rationale for links etc. If you link to outside pages, you can comment on whether or not the material on the outside sites dovetails with course material. If it does not, then it may not a be a good site to link to.
2) I've never done a website before. Where can I get help? You can create a free webstie at geocities.com. It's really easy, most of my students go this route and claim that it is very easy for first-timers.
3) Do I create my own links, or can I link to other relevant sites? You can choose one or both strategies.
Containing outside links makes for a stronger website. Make sure in your paper that you discuss whether or not the linked material corresponds to the course material.
4) I am a very poor writer, does that matter? Yes, the quality of the writing is important. If you have trouble writing, there are serivces you can pusue on campus before turning your paper in.
5) I really want to do this, but I have soooooooooo many questions! Take on this challenge and see me for help!
