My Personal Interests

I am passionate about sea kayaking and my 1973 R75/5 BMW motorcycle. Here are some photos from a recent paddling trip among the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. In addition, I have included some pictures of my motorcycle.

Sea Kayaking

My favorite hardshell kayak is the Mariner Express (pictured above) that was built for me in Seattle by Matt and Cam Brose. I have been fortunate to paddle coastal waters around Bar Harbor, Maine, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in Atlantic Canada, as well as Puget Sound near the San Juan and Orcas Islands. In addition, I have camped on many of the islands within the Lake Superior Apostle Island archepelago (see map).

My second kayak is a Merlin LT made by Seattle-based Eddyline, and my paddles are made by Lightning of Colton, Oregon.

Here's the most complete directory of links related to sea kayaking.

My 1973 R75/5 BMW motorcycle

The /5 series was only produced between 1970 and 1973. At that time, this bike, with an engine displacement of 750cc, was the most powerful motorcycle made by BMW. This model earned the degrogatory nickname "toaster tank" because of its chrome panels on each side of the fuel tank. Until the inception of the /5 model, almost all BMWs were assembled in plain and basic black (and all had a kick-start). The addition of chrome represented a bold experiment by BMW. Unfortunately, most people considered this new look ugly, and U.S. sales were negatively affected. As a consequence, "toaster tanks" are now quite rare and collectable.
