Application for the Major in Psychology
for current Illinois State students

Qualifications for admission to the Major in Psychology:

Students who have completed 12- 29 hours need to have an Illinois State grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Students who have completed 30 hours or more need to have:
1. An ISU grade point average of 2.2 or higher based on at least 12 hours completed at Illinois State, and
2. A grade of C or better in:

  • PSY 111 (or PSY 110 if taken prior to admission to the Major),
  • MAT 120, 121, 144, or 145,
  • a laboratory science course,
  • PSY 138 (or ECO/GEO/POL/PSY 138 for students in catalog 2004-2005 catalog or earlier), and
  • PSY 231.

Students who have completed fewer than 75 hours at the end of the semester they apply to the Major need to download and complete the Application for Psychology Major (MS Word) or (PDF). The student's portion of the application can be filled out online before it is printed. The MS Word document will download to the computer's desktop. Adobe® Acrobat® is needed to access PDF files. If the PDF file will not, click on Adobe Reader to download a free copy of the software.

The Department of Psychology does not typically admit students in the Major who have completed 75 hours or more. However, students who will have completed 75 hours or more when they apply to the Major should review the separate application procedure.

Applications are accepted and processed only during September, February, and May through July. Students completing their admission requirements for the Major during the semester can mark their applications as "hold for semester grades." These applications will be reviewed and processed after final grades are posted for the current semester.
