Transferring to Illinois State

This Web site is for students who are currently attending other colleges or universities and who want to transfer to Illinois State and major in psychology. High school seniors should see Considering Illinois State and What’s Unique about Psychology.

Overview
Psychology at Illinois State is an over-enrolled major; the department cannot accept every student who applies to the Major. Therefore, students considering transferring to ISU and applying to the Major in Psychology should carefully review the University's Course Articulation guides. These guides identify which courses, taken at other colleges and universities, will receive credit at Illinois State toward graduation requirements.

Students admitted to Illinois State from other colleges or universities are also considered for admission to the Major in Psychology if they have a 2.5 or higher grade point average from their transfer institution(s) and have earned a C or better in each of the following courses:

  • the equivalent of PSY 111 Introduction to Psychology;
  • the equivalent of MAT 120 Finite Mathematics, MAT 121 Applied Calculus, MAT 144 Precalculus, or MAT 145 Calculus I; and
  • a laboratory science course.

Students admitted to Illinois State and admitted to the Major
Students are required to participate in the Transfer Registration Program. Students who do not attend Transfer Registration may not be able to enroll in the PSY courses required during their first semester at Illinois State in order to remain in the Major. Students who do not complete the required courses during their first semester fail to meet Standards for Progress in the Major and will be dropped from the Major. Required courses include PSY 231 Research Methods in Psychology, PSY 200 Careers in Psychology, and/or PSY 138 Reasoning in Psychology Using Statistics.

Students admitted to Illinois State who are not admitted to the Major
Students have one semester at Illinois State to meet all of the requirements needed to apply to the Major in Psychology. See Advisement and Requirements for the Major. The most common difficulty is fulfilling the math requirement.

Students must enroll in PSY 138 Reasoning in Psychology Using Statistics during their first semester at Illinois State. PSY 138 has a math requirement of MAT 120 Finite Mathematics or MAT 145 Calculus I. It is not possible to complete the math requirement and enroll in PSY 138 during the same semester. Therefore, if the math requirement is not met during the summer, transfer students will not be admitted to the Major in Psychology after their first semester at Illinois State.

Students who are admitted to Illinois State as general students are not guaranteed admission to the Major at a later date. Due to the over-enrollment of the Major in Psychology, the department cannot admit to the Major every student who meets admissions criteria. During their first semester at Illinois State, students should schedule an appointment with a Psychology advisor to discuss possible admission into the Major.
