Place of Birth: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Portuguese is spoken throughout Brazil, a country about half the size of South America and larger than the continental U.S. I was born and raised in Rio, which is often called the "marvelous city" due to its striking beauty. Rio is located in southeast Brazil. It has a population of about 10 million people (called "Cariocas"). Cariocas are well known for their care-free attitude and sensuality. Gender roles in Rio are flexible, especially during "Carnival" (Brazilian Mardi Gras). The picture below is from the district of Ipanema, which inspired the song, "The girl from Ipanema."

Parents: J. E. DeSouza (deceased) & Marilda Moliterni. Partner: Mark Smith.

I am an only child. My father was a commander in the Brazilian Navy. My mother lives in the city of Rio de Janeiro. She is now retired, but she was a secretary for an insurance company. Below is a picture of us at Sugar Loaf in Rio, Brazil.

Pets

I have a dog. His name is Mack. He is a chocolate lab. I also have a cat called Speedy. He is a tabby. Both are very lively and get in trouble frequently.

Hobbies

I often go to the movies, the theater, and symphonies. I participate in some sports (tennis, biking, and hiking). I also like the daily little pleasures of reading newspapers and books at coffee houses and playing with my dog.

Travels

I love to travel! During 2008, I visited Boston, Berlin (Germany), and Vienna (Austria). We often go to nearby cities (e.g., Chicago, Indianapolis, and St. Louis) to partake of cultural events and eating out.

The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.
