Abstract
Certain threads of discourse meaning are held together by devices like
number agreement. We examined how speakers create number agreement for
verbs and for two types of pronouns, those with antecedents in a different
clause and those with antecedents in the same clause. To asses grammatical
versus referential control of pronoun agreement, the antecedents carried
conflicting grammatical and notional number. Comparisons between verb
and pronoun agreement suggested that pronoun number tends to be notionally
controlled, regardless of the antecedent's location.
