Dr. Cutting's Pages:

Experimentally Elicited Idiomatic Blends

Abstract

Two experiments explored the nature of idiomatic representation with a speech-error elicitation task. The first experiment showed greater interference between idioms with the same syntactic structure. The second experiment demonstrated an influence of an idiom's literal meaning. The results argue against the traditional view of idioms as noncomponential phrases.
