Overlapping Phonological and Semantic Activation in Spoken Word Production.
Abstract
Three experiments investigated whether meaning and sound information are
simultaneously active during spoken word production. Speakers named
pictures of homophones ("ball") while distractor words related to the
depicted ("game") or alternative ("dance") meaning were played. Alternative
meaning distractors facilitated naming while related distractors slowed
naming, indicating overlapping sound and meaning activation.
