Course Description and Objective

The purpose of the class is to introduce you to the many sub-disciplines that make up the field of psychology, with a particular emphasis on the study of human thought and behavior. In this course you will be exposed to psychological theories and research on a wide variety of topics including the biological bases of behavior, cognitive processes, human development, and emotion. You will also learn about the application of psychological principles and research to real-world problems such as measuring intelligence and treating mental illness.

Course Requirements

You are required to read the assigned chapters in your textbook, to attend class regularly, and to take several exams and quizzes as described below. You will need #2 pencils for exams and quizzes, and are expected to provide your own, so buy pencils now and be sure to bring them to class on exam and quiz days!

Grading

Your grade will be based on your performance on exams and quizzes. There will be four exams throughout the semester, each covering 4 to 5 chapters of the textbook and all lecture material corresponding to those chapters. Each exam will be worth 20% (one fifth) of your final grade. In addition, there will be 13 quizzes throughout the semester. In general, each quiz will cover one chapter's worth of reading and lecture material, and will be worth 10 points. Your quiz grade will be based on the sum of your highest 10 quiz scores, and will account for 20% (one fifth) of your final grade.

Formula for final grade:

Sum of highest 10 quiz scores 100 possible points
Exam 1 100 possible points
Exam 2 100 possible points
Exam 3 100 possible points
Exam 4 100 possible points

Total 500 possible points + 25 possible extra credit points

Make-up Policy

Because you get to drop three quizzes, there will be no makeup quizzes. A missed quiz will automatically count for a dropped quiz. Exam makeups for excused absences will be during the time scheduled for the final exam. This is the only chance for a makeup. The makeup will consist of a longer more comprehensive version of the final exam. The final exam, scheduled for Friday, December 12 at 2 p.m., will be administered only on the assigned date, at the assigned time. DO NOT MAKE TRAVEL PLANS (OR HAVE ANYONE ELSE MAKE TRAVEL PLANS FOR YOU) THAT INCLUDE ABSENCE FROM THIS EXAM.

Extra Credit

You will have an opportunity to earn extra credit points for participation in up to five hours of experiments through the Psychology Department's Human Participant Pool. For each hour of experiment participation, you will earn five points of extra credit, for a total of 25 possible extra credit points. Please see the attached handout for details.
